Weightlifter on life support after accident

NEWARK -- A Granville family is clinging to hope at Grant Medical Center this morning while their son undergoes treatment for injuries sustained in a weightlifting accident Monday afternoon.

Chris Harmon, 20, of Granville, had just broken his previous record for the bench press, topping out at 420 or 430 pounds, his father, Scott, said Tuesday morning.

Chris proceeded to an incline press at the Advantage Club, 1845 W. Main St., to bench 250 pounds when the weight slipped from his hands and landed on his face, smashing his cheekbones and severing two arteries. A spotter had not been present, Harmon said.

The question of why Chris was lifting without a spotter is unanswered for the moment, Scott said, as the family is foremost concerned with their son's survival.

Advantage Club staff carried Chris face down to the ambulance, a move that Scott was told saved Chris' life by preventing the blood from draining into his lungs.

An emergency medical ambulance transported Chris to Grant because it had been too foggy for a helicopter to fly, Scott said.

As of Tuesday morning, Chris was on life support in critical condition, awaiting another surgery to stop bleeding. He had lost four units of blood -- "about half the blood in your body," Scott said.

Already he has undergone surgery to put in a tracheotomy tube and will need numerous reconstructive surgeries to repair his face.

"I have been up for 25 hours and I'm just ... I can't even explain it. It's my worst nightmare, to see my son laying there, helpless, and there's nothing I can do," Scott said Tuesday morning.

The family has received an outpouring of support from community members and friends, Scott said.

"All our friends, all his friends have been really supportive. Everybody praying and all the bodybuilders from the gym coming over and calling," he said.

Chris is a Granville High School graduate who played football at Heidelberg College. He transferred to the Newark campus of Ohio State University after an injury and continued to pursue bodybuilding, which he has been doing since the age of 16 or 17, Scott said.

Pour certains mouvements les machines et les haltères, c'est plus sécurisant.
