B-vitamin Mixture Improves the Analgesic Effect of Diclofenac in Patients with Osteoarthritis: A Double Blind Study
Magana-Villa MC Drug Res (Stuttg), 2013 March 22; [Epub ahead of print]
In a randomized, double-blind, clinical trial involving 48 patients scheduled to have total knee arthroplasty, whose pain level was at least 7 of a 1-10 cm visual analogue scale, supplementation with B vitamins (100 mg thiamine, 100 mg pyridoxine, and 5 mg cyanocobalamin) in addition to a single muscular injection of sodium diclofenac (75 mg) was found to be more effective in bringing about an analgesic effect, as compared to treatment with the diclofenac injection alone. Pain level was evaluated in the 12 hour period post-injection.
The authors state, "This study constitutes a clinical support on the improvement of the analgesic effect of diclofenac by B vitamins in patients with osteoarthritis programmed to total knee arthroplasty, as a clinical model of inflammatory pain."
